The twelve signs look like twelve separate personalities, and the horoscope columns treat them that way. Underneath, they are built from two much simpler ideas. Every sign has an element, which says what kind of energy it runs on, and a modality, which says how that energy moves. Learn the two groupings and you can work out most of a sign's character from first principles, which is a better foundation than memorising twelve lists of adjectives.
The four elements
Fire signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Fire is energy, enthusiasm, instinct and the urge to act. Fire people start things, lead things and burn out on things; they are warm, direct and quick to anger and quick to forgive. Their weakness is patience.
Earth signs are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. Earth is the material world: the body, money, work, things that can be touched and built. Earth people are practical, reliable and slow to change, and they measure ideas by whether they work. Their weakness is rigidity.
Air signs are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. Air is thought, speech, ideas and connection between people. Air people are curious, sociable and good with words, and they live in their heads. Their weakness is detachment, from their feelings and sometimes from reality.
Water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Water is emotion, intuition, memory and the unseen currents between people. Water people feel everything, remember everything and know things they cannot explain. Their weakness is being overwhelmed.
The elements pair off. Fire and air feed each other, which is why those signs generally get along; earth and water do the same. Fire and water clash, and so do earth and air, at least until each learns what the other is for.
The three modalities
Cardinal signs are Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn, the signs that open each season. Cardinal energy initiates: these are the starters, the people who see what needs doing and begin it. They are less good at finishing.
Fixed signs are Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius, the signs at the heart of each season. Fixed energy sustains: these are the people who hold a course, keep a promise and finish what others began. They are less good at changing direction.
Mutable signs are Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces, the signs that close each season and prepare for the next. Mutable energy adapts: these are the flexible ones, the translators and the improvisers. They are less good at committing.
Putting element and modality together
Each sign is one element crossed with one modality, and no two signs share the pair. That is the whole system. Aries is cardinal fire: energy that starts things, the pioneer. Leo is fixed fire: energy that sustains, the king who holds court. Sagittarius is mutable fire: energy that adapts, the traveller. Taurus is fixed earth, the builder; Virgo is mutable earth, the craftsman who refines; Capricorn is cardinal earth, the one who founds the enterprise. Gemini is mutable air, the messenger; Libra is cardinal air, the one who opens negotiations; Aquarius is fixed air, the one who holds a principle. Cancer is cardinal water, the one who starts a family; Scorpio is fixed water, still and deep; Pisces is mutable water, the one who flows into any shape.
Why it matters for a reading
When a palm reader knows a person's sign, the element tells them what to expect from the hand shape, since palmistry uses the same four elements for the shapes of hands. The modality tells them what to expect from the lines: cardinal signs tend to strong starts and branching lines, fixed signs to deep unbroken lines, mutable signs to finer, more changeable ones. Gemstones follow the elements too. Fire signs suit the warm stones, ruby, garnet, citrine; earth signs the grounding ones, emerald, jasper, moss agate; air signs the clear ones, sapphire, aquamarine, lapis lazuli; water signs the lunar and watery ones, pearl, moonstone, opal.
